What Jobs Will Exist in the Future That Don’t Exist Today

Ten years ago, nobody was hiring a prompt engineer. There was no such thing as an AI governance manager, no one paid to manage relationships between humans and warehouse robots, and no company had a “responsible AI lead” sitting in an executive meeting. Today, all of these are real, paid positions, and some of them pay six-figure salaries to people who could not have described their own job when they were in college.

This is not a new phenomenon. Every major shift in technology, energy, or social organization has created job titles that made no sense a generation earlier. What is different now is the pace. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, which surveyed more than 1,000 employers representing over 14 million workers worldwide, job disruption will affect 22 percent of jobs by 2030, with 170 million new roles created and 92 million displaced, for a net gain of 78 million jobs. The interesting question is not simply which jobs will disappear. That question gets asked constantly, and the answer is usually some version of “repetitive tasks and predictable paperwork.” The more useful question is what kinds of work are actually being built to replace them, and why those particular jobs, rather than some other set, are the ones taking shape.

The Scale of the Shift

It is easy to treat forecasts like the WEF report as abstract predictions, the kind of confident-sounding numbers that rarely survive contact with reality. But the report is not simply guessing. It is a real-time survey of employer hiring intentions, and its authors describe several forces acting at once: technological change, geoeconomic fragmentation, economic uncertainty, demographic shifts, and the green transition are all reshaping the labor market simultaneously, rather than one trend dominating the others. That combination matters. A single force, like automation, tends to produce a fairly narrow set of new jobs clustered around the technology itself. Multiple forces acting together produce new jobs in stranger, less predictable places: aging populations creating demand for caregiving roles nobody trained for a decade ago, climate policy creating compliance jobs inside industries that never needed them before, and geopolitical tension creating entirely new categories of risk management.

The employers surveyed for the report expect 39 percent of the key skills required in the job market to change by 2030, though that figure is actually an improvement over previous years, since companies have gotten better at anticipating which skills they will need. The skills rising fastest are not surprising in outline: AI and big data top the list, followed by networks and cybersecurity and general technological literacy. Where the Fastest Growth Is Actually Happening

Start with the roles growing fastest in raw numbers. The WEF report lists big data specialists, fintech engineers, and AI and machine learning specialists as among the fastest-growing jobs through the end of the decade, alongside software and application developers and security management specialists. None of these are conceptually new. A software developer in 2030 is still recognizably doing the same kind of work a developer did in 2015. The green transition is producing a similar pattern. As companies work toward climate commitments, roles such as autonomous and electric vehicle specialists and environmental and renewable energy engineers now rank among the fifteen fastest-growing professions in the WEF’s data. This is worth pausing on, because it illustrates something important about how new jobs form: they rarely appear because someone invented a job title first and then found people to do it. They appear because a technology, a regulation, or a demographic shift creates a gap that existing job categories cannot fill, and a new title eventually gets attached to the work that has already started happening informally. A useful example is environmental stewardship. The WEF identified it as a top-growing skill category for the first time in the 2025 report, reflecting the increasing need for professionals with expertise in sustainability reporting, circular economy principles, and corporate ESG strategies. Five years ago, most of this work was scattered across compliance departments, marketing teams, and outside consultants. Jobs Created by the Job of Managing AI

The most striking new category of work, though, is not built around using artificial intelligence. It is built around supervising it.

Consider the AI governance manager, a role that translates regulatory requirements like the EU AI Act into practical decisions about how a company builds and deploys its systems. As one recent account of the role put it, this person has to sit between the data scientists and the legal team, translate risk into plain language, and ensure that the AI being built reflects the values the company claims to hold. A related role, the business information security officer, or BISO, has emerged as companies realize that cybersecurity can no longer live entirely inside the IT department. These specialists work directly with marketing, sales, and operations teams to weave security thinking into everyday decisions without grinding innovation to a halt, moving fluidly between a technical conversation in the morning and a boardroom presentation in the afternoon. Then there is the prompt engineer, probably the most recognizable new AI job title, whose work involves crafting the questions and instructions given to generative AI models to get the best possible output, often by testing different phrasings until a system produces reliable, useful results. The title barely existed before 2022. Within two years it had become a recognized specialty, complete with dedicated training courses and, in some markets, remarkably high salaries.

These jobs share a common thread. They exist not because AI does the work humans used to do, but because AI creates a new kind of work: watching, correcting, translating, and taking responsibility for a system that can act faster than any person but cannot yet be fully trusted to act alone.

The Jobs Automation Cannot Absorb

A second category of new work is emerging from a completely different pressure: demographic change. As populations age in much of the developed world, demand for elder care, healthcare support, and social services is climbing steadily, and the WEF’s analysis points to more jobs in elder care, healthcare, and social services as one of the clearer long-term trends in its forecast.

Manufacturing is producing its own version of this pattern, in a less obvious form. As factories adopt more “cobots,” collaborative robots that work alongside human employees rather than replacing them outright, new roles are appearing in human-robot interaction, safety compliance, and process tuning, jobs that mix engineering, psychology, and coaching on the factory floor. Healthcare is seeing something similar as AI systems draft clinical notes: hospitals are creating positions like scribe team leads and AI documentation coordinators, whose job is to check the accuracy of AI-generated records and train staff to work with them.

What connects elder care, cobot supervision, and AI documentation review is that none of them are jobs a machine can simply take over from a human. They exist specifically at the boundary where automation stops being reliable on its own, and a person has to step in to judge, correct, reassure, or explain. Automation does not just eliminate work. It also generates a new layer of work whose entire purpose is managing automation itself.

What the Predictions Tend to Get Wrong

It would be a mistake to treat every confident list of future job titles as a settled forecast. Predicting labor markets is notoriously difficult, and forecasts made even two or three years ago about “the jobs of 2025” often look dated by the time the date arrives. Some job titles that seemed destined for permanence, like early versions of prompt engineering, may narrow, merge into broader roles, or fade as the underlying technology becomes easier for non-specialists to use directly.

There is also a tendency, in popular coverage of this topic, to treat futuristic-sounding job titles as more significant than they really are. A handful of genuinely novel roles, like AI ethics officer or robot relationship manager, attract disproportionate media attention because they sound striking, even though the much larger share of net new employment is expected to come from more familiar categories. The WEF’s own data shows that some of the largest projected job gains through 2030 are in existing occupations like farmwork, not exotic new technology roles. New job titles make better headlines than growing demand for existing ones, but headlines are not the same as labor market reality.

The honest summary is that some of the specific titles circulating today will matter in 2030, and some will not. What is more durable is the underlying pattern: new work keeps forming at the exact points where new technology, new regulation, and human judgment intersect, and that pattern is unlikely to stop just because the specific job titles attached to it keep changing.

What This Pattern Reveals

The deeper story here is not really about artificial intelligence, or climate policy, or aging populations individually. It is about how labor markets have always absorbed disruptive change: not by eliminating human judgment, but by relocating it to wherever the new technology is least trustworthy on its own.

Every one of the roles discussed here, from AI governance manager to cobot safety specialist to elder care worker, sits at a point where a system, a policy, or a demographic shift has outrun the institutions built to manage it. New jobs do not appear because someone predicts them well in advance. They appear because a gap opens up faster than anyone expected, and someone has to fill it.

That is probably the most useful thing to take from any forecast about future work. The specific titles will keep shifting, sometimes unrecognizably. But the underlying mechanism, gaps opening faster than institutions can close them, and people stepping into those gaps, has driven job creation through every major economic transition in modern history, and there is little reason to think this one will be the exception.
